PowderedSencha

Premium Powdered Sencha - finely ground tea (50g)

Much like matcha, this green tea is made by simply gringing our usual high quality tea leaves into a fine powder to produce an almost instant way of enjoying Japanese sencha.

As the tea consists of finely ground whole leaf, it can be enjoyed with hot or cold water and even mixed into smoothies or cakes, whilst at the same time still maximising the health benefits gained from enjoying this versitle tea.

Made using only the finest first flush leaves, this tea has not been overly processed or freeze dried; it is simply finely ground 100% pure whole tea leaf, which means it is as natural and pure as conventional traditional Japanese senchas.

A happy side effect of powdering the tea was that it made it extremely versatile. We now have customers who just add powdered sencha to their pre-workout shakes or even give it to their children mixed with a little bit of apple juice to diguise the flavour.

Why is this tea powdered?

When we first stated importing our premium traditional sencha we would often get requests from customers for the tea to be packed into teabags for convenience.

However, once we started to look into getting teabags made we quickly discovered that when using high quality tea, the leaves would expand so much within the bags that they were unable to mix and interact with the water enough to allow the flavours to infuse properly.

So we started to look at finely grinding the tea to allow an instant release of flavour, whilst also combining the ability to enjoy the tea anywhere , without the need for a teapot, making it ideal for drinking at the office or on the go. It wasn't quite as straightforward as it sounds, but after much development we think we have found a tea that gives you the best of all worlds.

What is the difference between powdered sencha and matcha?

The truth is, very little, although depending on the desired use for matcha, our powdered sencha will not always be suitable.

If you have read about the fantastic health benefits that matcha has then look no further; much of this is due to matcha consisting of the ground tea leaf, meaning that when you drink the tea you are consuming the whole leaf and are getting an added green tea health boost. As our powdered sencha is made using an almost identical method using a 'kabuse' sencha, the health properties are very similar and available at a fraction of the cost. If you already have matcha in your diet, try substituting powdered sencha into your regular routine

Should you require a matcha for use in the tea ceremony then I'm afraid this sencha is not quite suitable. More information can be found in the matcha section of this site and will explain in detail exactly what the differences are.

What is the best way to enjoy powdered tea?

The simplest way is just to add hot water to a cup with some powdered sencha, stir and enjoy. It really is that simple. Brilliantly the tea will not get stronger and more bitter as time passes so if you make a cup at the office and leave it for 10 min, it will still be fresh and mellow in flavour and not bitter at all.

As the tea is made using the whole tea leaf, it does not necessarily need to be brewed with hot water to extract the health benefits. This means you can happily mix the tea with cold water for instant iced sencha or add it to cakes or vanilla ice cream for a splash of classic matcha flavour.

Even if you are not a huge fan of the taste of green tea in general, but would like to have it in your diet, you can always mix some powdered tea into a glass of fruit juice or a smoothie which will mask the flavour almost totally for you.

We would also like to ease any concerns our customers may have regarding the origins of the teas we import as we do on occasion still get queries regarding the proximity of the tea production to the recent problems surrounding the Fukushima area. All of our tea is grown and processed by the same estate in Kagoshima, which is located at the southwestern tip of the southern island of Kyushu. Thus the tea is almost as far as it is possible to be from the affected region whilist staying within Japan and there are no concerns regarding contamination associated with our teas.
